Landon in the Kitchen

One of Landon's favorite activities is eating, so he is also a big supporter of the food preparation process. In this case, Landon's "support" involves him carefully watching the detailed process (sometimes from a chair); barking his approval about the upcoming cuisine; and promptly eating any food tidbits that happen to drop from the counter prior to mealtime. If asked for a kiss during this important time, Landon will readily oblige, knowing that this improves his chances of receiving another bite. Landon certainly knows when mealtime is, for he alerts the resident humans, runs to the kitchen, and barks eagerly until receiving his meal. Yes, doggie mealtime is quite an exciting time of day.

The main staple of Landon's diet is a grain-free, holistic dog kibble from Blue Buffalo. This food works well with Landon's digestive system and has helped him stay healthy and handsome. Landon's meals are often topped with a bit of fruit (blueberries, apples), vegetables (spinach, broccoli, carrots), or cooked chicken or salmon. He also receives daily probiotics and a canine multivitamin, and has a constant supply of fresh water.

Sometimes (e.g., when Landon's human mom and dad leave the house for a while), Landon and his two sister shelties also receive a Blue Buffalo health bar. These health bars come in a variety of flavors, including bacon/cheese, pumpkin/cinnamon, fish/sweet potato, and apple/yogurt. Landon loves them all.

What is especially exciting for Landon though is when his mom makes him homemade treats, like his favorite Apple Carrot Dog Treats. These are quick and easy to make, which Landon likes, because that means less time between baking and eating. Landon likes to sit on a chair and watch his mom mix the ingredients of his treats. He sometimes even gets flour on his nose (see photo). Below is the recipe for these treats. Landon hopes that your dog likes them. Humans might even like them too. Enjoy!

Landon’s Apple Carrot Dog Treats

1 cup of whole wheat flour, brown rice flour, or gluten free flour
1 cup of grated carrots
1 tsp. baking powder
1 egg
½ cup unsweetened apple sauce
½ tsp. salt (optional, but the salt helps extend the shelf life of the treats)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix the ingredients together until dough forms. Roll the dough into small balls and place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Press each dough ball down slightly so the biscuits are about ¼ inch thick. Bake until golden brown (about 30-40 minutes) and then let the treats cool on a wire rack. Makes about 2 dozen small treats.

Hi, I am Landon's mom and I will be helping him out with his blog. He is very smart, but he is kind of slow at typing.
